明治元年，日本由香港购得全套铸币机器(英国人的机器，1866至1868年曾在香港铸造过香港第一套货币)，在大阪成立国家造币厂。明治三年，造币厂落成，马上开铸银圆。将“圆”定为日本的本位货币，即实行银本位制度，日本初铸银圆，其意是驱逐当时在日本大肆横行的本洋，鹰洋，统一货币。

后来明治十一年至三十年龙洋的铸造量逐步递增，进入了日本龙洋的时代。相对于日本贸易银元，日本圆龙银元是近代流入我国的外国银元当中数量不多，也较为罕见的一个品种，因币面有飞龙图案，故在我国又称之为日本圆龙洋。

Compared with Japan's trade silver dollar, Japan's Yuanlong silver dollar is one of the few and rare foreign silver dollars flowing into China in modern times. 日本“龙洋”早年在中国被称作“银洋”，它实际上是外国商贸银币在中国民间的一种简称。早在明朝中期，西班牙就已在墨西哥制造“本洋”银币（俗称“双柱”），至清代乾隆、嘉庆年间，中国对外贸易日趋繁荣，从外国流入中国的银币种类也日渐增多。

日本“龙洋”共有五种规格，即五钱（1.25克）、十钱（2.7克）、二十钱（5.39克）、五十钱（有10.13克与13.48克两种样式）和一圆（26.96克）。日本“龙洋”设计别致，铸工较为精致。按日本“龙洋”发行年代的不同，又可分为很多版式，仅以一圆“龙洋”为例，从明治三年起至明治四十五年就有几十种之多。
